Me on a brief snowmobile trip with Patricia to the Pegasus wreck. Pegasus was a Super Continental aircraft operated by the Navy that crashed at one of the McMurdo airfields in 1970. It tried landing in 35+kt crosswinds and lost one of its wings. None of the 80 or so people on board were killed. The wreck was used as office space for a little while and was then drug out to what is now the location of our white ice runway. The runway was named after the Pegasus. Photo by Patricia Ballou.

Feigning exhaustion on the ascent up Castle Rock, on a hike with Mike, the winter water plant mechanic. Photo by Mike Whittington.

Castle Rock is the longest and most difficult hike out of McMurdo, but unless the weather is bad the hike is really not very difficult. I couldn't find my water bottle, so I just packed some soda. Photo by Mike Whittington.

Wandering up Castle Rock. The Rock is a weird, layered, brittle material. Photo by Mike Whittington.

Me on top of Castle Rock. The view is looking west, and the icebreaker channel is visible in the background. The Oden icebreaker can be seen in the channel. Photo by Mike Whittington.
